Frequently Asked Questions
What are the system requirements to run ArtistInfo for Mac?
ArtistInfo will run on macOS, on OS X 10.9 and later, as well as on iOS 8 and later. Your currently used macOS version number is shown under the Apple menu "About This Mac". ArtistInfo depends on Internet access and will not work when your device is offline.
Why takes it a few seconds to see a search result?
ArtistInfo is collecting the information that it displays from several Web services and data sources such as Wikipedia, MusicBrainz, Metason and iTunes Store. Most of these services allow one request per second from the same client. Therefore it takes a while to aggregate all needed information.
Why does the quality of presented data in ArtistInfo varies a lot?
ArtistInfo does not maintain content on artists and albums. The information presented in ArtistInfo is collected from open Internet data sources such as Wikipedia, MusicBrainz, and Discogs (partly replicated and cashed in the Metason DB). If you are not happy with the data quality you may participate in adding or editing content on these open platforms. Find more information on participating at the corresponding web sites:
ArtistInfo presents information that it was able to collect as structured data. For more detailed and further information you may use the external web links presented in the tab, such as free form text at Wikipedia.
Why is there a status light displayed in the user interface (of the Mac version)?
ArtistInfo depends on Internet-based Web services and data sources from Metason, MusicBrainz, DBpedia, and iTunes Store. These services might be unreachable or might be overloaded so that ArtistInfo will get no response. ArtistInfo will then automatically disable these services in order not to block the application. This will reduce the content quality within ArtistInfo and the status light becomes red.
If all connections work perfect the status light is green. The status light is orange on minor issues in accessing data. If services are not available due to time-outs and therefore are automatically disabled by ArtistInfo, the status light becomes red. You may analyse the connection status in the pop-over panel by clicking the status light (Mac version) or within the settings panel (iOS version). With the "Reset" button you force ArtistInfo to try again accessing all data sources on future requests.
Why does ArtistInfo not sync with iTunes immediately after start-up?
ArtistInfo gets notified by iTunes when a new song starts playing. If ArtistInfo is started while a song is already playing, iTunes does not send a notification to ArtistInfo. You can enforce the notification by pausing and restarting the song in iTunes or by enabling 'Sync on selection in iTunes' in the Preferences panel.
Why are songs played in Spotify not seen in ArtistInfo for iOS?
Sorry, this feature is not implemented due to data access restrictions.
Why are songs played in Spotify not seen in ArtistInfo for Android?
In the Spotify settings turn "Device Broadcast Status" to on in order to sync with the ArtistInfo app. The Spotify settings can be found in the "Your Library" view.
Will ArtistInfo be available in other languages than English?
No. Typically, information found in album credits and in album booklets are in English only. So ArtistInfo will stay as well in the English-only mode.
Is there a Windows version available?
No. ArtistInfo is available as native app on macOS, on iOS and on Android. On Windows please use ArtistInfo for Web in your favourite browser at music.metason.net.
